Æthelberht (atau Ethelbert) (Æþelberht, berarti "Nobel yang Megah") merupakan Raja Wessex dari tahun 860 sampai tahun 865. Ia merupakan putra ketiga Æthelwulf dari Wessex dengan istri pertamanya, Osburga. Pada tahun 855 ia mnejadi wakil raja Kent sewaktu ayahnya, Æthelwulf, mengunjungi Roma. Abangnya Æthelbald tinggal dan bertanggung jawab atas Sachen Barat. Setelah kematian ayahnya pada tahun 858 ia menggantikan ayahnya sebagai Raja Kent dan bagian barat lainnya di kerajaan. Ketika Æthelbald wafat tanpa keturunan pada tahun 860, kerajaan Sachen Barat diwariskan kepada Æthelberht.^[1]^[2]

Pemerintahan

Seperti ayahnya dan abangnya ia juga dimahkotai di Kingston upon Thames. Di dalam Anglo-Saxon Chronicle menjelaskan bahwa pemerintahan Æthelberht berada di dalam suasana harmoni dan damai. Meskipun hal ini benar dari urusan internal, bangsa Viking tetap sebagai ancaman utama, tidak berhasil menyerang Winchester dan menyerang timur Kent.^[3]

Satu perkembangan adalah bahwa Wessex dan penaklukan yang baru selatan-timur menjadi sebuah kerajaan bersatu. Tidak seperti para pendahulunya, Æthelberht tidak menunjuk anggota lain dari keluarganya sebagai wakil raja Kent. Sebuah piagam yang dikeluarkan pada tahun pertama Æthelberht mencerminkan perakitan jenis baru yang luar biasa: piagam pertama dari raja Sachen Barat yang disertai lengkap baik Sachen Barat dan saksi-saksi Kentish.^[3]

Kematian

Æthelberht wafat pada tahun 865 dan digantikan oleh adiknya Æthelred. Ia dimakamkan di Biara Sherborne di Dorset disisi abangnya Æthelbald.
