Wessex

Kerajaan Wessex (/ˈwɛsɪks/; bahasa Inggris Kuno: Ƿestseaxna rīċe [ˈwestsæɑksnɑ ˈriːtʃe]) atau Kerajaan Saxon Barat (bahasa Inggris kuno:Westseaxna rīce) adalah sebuah kerajaan Anglo-Saxon di Inggris Barat Daya. Kerajaan ini berdiri dari abad ke-6 sampai munculnya negara Inggris bersatu pada abad ke-10.

Anglo-Saxon percaya bahwa Wessex didirikan oleh Cerdic dan Cynric, tetapi ada kemungkinan bahwa teori ini hanya legenda saja.[1] Dua sumber utama bagi silsilah raja-raja Wessex, yaitu Anglo-Saxon Chronicle dan West Saxon Genealogical Regnal List saling menyatakan teori yang saling bertentangan.[2] Setelah Cenwealh dibaptis, Wessex berubah menjadi sebuah kerajaan Kristen. Selama masa pemerintahan Cenwealh ini, wilayah Saxon Barat diperluas. Raja berikutnya, Cædwalla, berhasil menaklukkan Sussex, Kent dan Isle of Wight. Penerusnya, Ine, mengeluarkan kode hukum yang dianggap sebagai kode hukum tertua di Inggris dan juga membentuk keuskupan kedua di Saxon Barat. Setelah Ine wafat, tahtanya diteruskan oleh serangkaian silsilah kerajaan yang tidak diketahui.[3]

Selama abad ke-8, sebagian besar raja-raja Wessex mampu mempertahankan keutuhan Kerajaan Wessex. Kejayaan kerajaan ini bertambah ketika Egbert menaklukkan Dumnonia, menguasai Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Essex, Mercia dan merebut kekuasaan dari raja Northumbria, meskipun Mercia berhasil melepaskan diri pada tahun 830. Selama masa pemerintahan penggantinya, Æthelwulf, tentara Denmark menyerang muara Sungai Thames namun berhasil dikalahkan. Saat putra Æthelwulf, yaitu Æthelbald menguasai tahta, wilayah kerajaan dibagi-bagi untuk menghindari pertumpahan darah. Æthelwulf digantikan oleh empat putranya, yang paling bungsu kelak yang akan menjadi Alfred yang Agung.[4]

Selama masa pemerintahan Alfred, Wessex berulang kali diserang oleh Denmark. Alfred juga mengeluarkan sistem hukum baru, merekrut para kaum cendekia menjadi anggota kerajaan dan mencurahkan dana kerajaan yang besar untuk membangun kapal-kapal dan angkatan perang.[5] Putranya, Edward berhasil mengambil alih Midlands dan Anglia Timur dari Denmark dan menjadi penguasa Mercia pada tahun 918 setelah kematian Æthelflæd, adiknya. Setelah Edward putra Athelstan menaklukkan Northumbria pada tahun 927, Inggris menjadi sebuah kerajaan bersatu untuk pertama kalinya. Cnut yang Agung, yang menaklukkan Inggris pada tahun 1016, dinobatkan sebagai Pangeran Wessex. Namun pada tahun 1066, Harold II mempersatukan Kerajaan Inggris dan Kepangeranan Wessex dan dengan begitu kedua kerajaan tersebut pada akhirnya menjadi suatu unit pemerintahan yang bersatu.[6]
