卡鲁日的早期历史尚不清楚。根据奥恩省旅游局网站的论述，卡鲁日的聚落形成与当地的城堡（法语：Château de Carrouges）密切相关，后者始建于公元14世纪，彼时卡鲁日所处区域为曼恩和诺曼底的边境地带，当地领主尚·德·卡鲁日在获得骑士爵位后在此修建带有碉楼的防御工事[6]。英法百年战争结束后，卡鲁日城堡被勒弗纳尔德蒂利埃家族（法语：Famille Le Veneur de Tillières）继承[6]。法国大革命后，卡鲁日成为奥恩省的一个市镇[5]。1866年，卡鲁日北部的圣玛格丽特-德卡鲁日分离而出成为独立市镇[7]。1913年，一条连接阿让唐和卡鲁日之间的地方铁路（法语：Voies ferrées économiques de l'Orne）建成通车，后于1937年关闭[8]。
