中，指距离四方或兩端相等的方位，又稱中间、中心、中央或中部等。也可引申为性质或等级介于两端之间。在表達抽象事物的空間關係時，意思亦等同裏外的「裏」[1][2]。

此外，方位的「中」又引申出相關地理名詞，如中国、中原、中土、中央、中東等，而「中國」與「中原」來自於古代漢族的世界觀的認知對自視為天下之中心而起名[3]。

在河南话里，「中」为表肯定的语气词，是河南话明显标志之一。
