1986年國家聯盟冠軍賽是由國聯東區冠軍紐約大都會對決國聯西區冠軍休士頓太空人的比賽，最後大都會以4勝2敗打敗太空人晉級世界大賽。這是大聯盟首度出現兩支擴編球隊於聯盟冠軍賽對決的戲碼。

古登主投7局送出5次三振，僅在2局上被Glenn Davis敲轟失分。不過史考特表現更好，他投滿9局送出14次三振無失分，強勢拿下完封勝。

太空人先發投手諾蘭·萊恩在4局上遭遇亂流，他單局挨了3支安打失2分。5局上他又被敲出4支安打，其中Keith Hernandez的三壘安打更是給予太空人重傷害。

有了打線的幫忙，大都會先發Bob Ojeda成功投滿9局，雖然被敲出10支安打，不過只失1分依舊拿下勝投。

羅恩·達令在首局就被敲出3支安打，加上自己控球不穩，丟出一次保送和一次觸身球，單局丟了2分。2局上，他又被Bill Doran敲出2分砲。

不過大都會在6局下反攻，蓋瑞·卡特雖然擊出滾地球，不過趁著游擊手失誤上壘，並帶有一分打點。達里爾·斯塔比雷隨後敲出3分砲，讓比賽回到原點。

7局上，Bill Doran保送上壘。Billy Hatcher觸擊推進，結果大都會發生傳球失誤，變成一三壘有人。Denny Walling隨即擊出滾地球送回超前分。

不過9局下，戰局又有了反轉。Lenny Dykstra在一出局二壘有人的球況下擊出再見全壘打，大都會便以6比5氣走太空人。

諾蘭·萊恩擺脫前一場的糟糕表現，這次投滿9局送出12次三振僅失1分。不過他的對手正好是大都會王牌德懷特·古登，他主投10局一樣只失1分。

兩隊一路僵持到12局下，Wally Beckman敲安上壘後，利用牽制傳球失誤站上二壘。太空人選擇故意四壞Keith Hernandez打算抓雙殺，不過蓋瑞·卡特成功敲出再見安打，大都會又一次氣走太空人。

Bob Ojeda在首局就遭遇危機，太空人從他手中敲出4支安打，迅速取得3比0領先。另外大都會打線受制於太空人先發Bob Knepper，前8局僅敲出2支安打，而且有7局出現3上3下。

不過大都會在9局上找到突破口，他們前四棒敲出3支安打追回2分，也把Knepper打退場。儘管太空人推出Dave Smith救援，不過他卻先丟出2次保送擠成滿壘，最後被Ray Knight敲出高飛犧牲打追平比數，Knepper也無緣勝投。

14局上，大都會靠著安打、保送和犧牲觸擊站上二三壘，Wally Beckman成功敲安送回一分。但是Billy Hatcher在下半局馬上敲出全壘打，讓太空人又立於不敗之地。

16局上，大都會靠著2支長打打下超前分。隨後Jeff Calhoun又投出2次暴投和一次保送，最後大都會單局攻下3分。

16局下，Davey Lopes獲得保送後，太空人敲出3支安打追回2分。不過Kevin Bass最後吞下再見三振，大都會便以7比6贏球，成功晉級世界大賽。
