Somon — ezib maydalangan gʻalla poyasi; yem-xashak. Bugʻdoy, arpa, javdar, suli va boshqa gʻalla ekinlarini xirmonda hoʻkiz, ot, eshak bilan yanchishda (hoʻp) mol tuyogʻi taʼsirida poya ezilib, mayda Somon qosil boʻladi. 100 kg bahorgi arpa va bugʻdoy Somonnining toʻyimligi 22—33 ozuqa birligiga teng. Bugʻdoy va arpani kombaynda yanchishda esa barglarining koʻp kismi yanchish jarayonida maydalanib, ventilyator shamoli taʼsiridan uchib ketadi, maydalanmagan poya koʻp chiqadi. Somonda 30—42% kletchatka, 35— 40% atrofida azotsiz ekstrakt moddalar, 1,3—2,8% protein va boshqa bor. Mollarga yedirishdan oldin Somonga maxsus usullarda: qaynoq suvda boʻktirish, qaynoq bugʻda bugʻlash, barda, lavlagi turpi, qirqilgan ildizmevalar bilan aralashtirish, kaustik soda, kalsiyli soda, ammiakli suv, suyuq ammiak va ohak suvi, osh tuzi, karbamid eritmasi bilan ishlov berish uning xushxoʻrligi va toʻyimliligini oshiradi.
