Demetra — yunon mifologiyasida dastlab hosildorlik, dehqonchilik, keyinchalik nikoh va oilaviy hayot maʼbudasi. Kronos va Reyaning qizi, Zevening singlisi, Persefonaning onasi. D. odamlarga bugʻdoy boshogʻini sovgʻa qilgan va ularni dehqonchilikka oʻrgatgan. Yer osti saltanati xudosi Aid Persefonani oʻgʻirlab ketganda D. gʻazablangan va yer hosil bermay qoʻygan, ocharchilik boshlangan. Shunda Zevs Persefonaga yarim yil yerda onasi bilan, yarim yil u dunyoda Aid bilan boʻlishni buyurgan. Bu afsonada oʻsimlik dunyosining har yili xazon boʻlishi va yangidan uygʻonishi jarayoni aks etgan. D. rimliklar mifologiyasidagi Seraraga mos keladi.
