Dinozor ve kuş fosilleri, sıklıkla başın geriye doğru atılması, kuyruğun uzatılması ve ağzı açık olması gibi karakteristik bir duruşta fosil olarak bulunur. Bazen "ölüm pozu" olarak adlandırılan bu duruşun nedeni bilimsel bir tartışma konusu olmuştur. Geleneksel açıklamalar, hayvanın boynundaki güçlü bağların vücudu poza çekmek için kuruyup büzülmesinden dolayı oluştuğunu söylemektedir.[1][2]

Cynthia Marshall Faux ve Kevin Padian, 2007'de canlı hayvanın ölüm sancıları sırasında opisthotonus'a maruz kaldığını ve pozun herhangi bir ölüm sonrası sürecin sonucu olmadığını öne sürdü.[3] Ayrıca, vücudun farklı bölgeleri ve uzuvlar farklı yönlerde olabileceğinden, vücudun bir "ölüm pozunda" rastgele düzenlenmesinden sorumlu olduğu fikrini de reddediyorlar, bu da hareket eden suyun bir sonucu olma ihtimalini düşük buluyorlar.[4] Ayrıca bağların kurutulmasının pozisyonu inandırıcı hale getireceği iddiasının da inandırıcı görünmediğini buldular.

Alicia Cutler, Brooks B. Britt ve Provo, Utah'daki Brigham Young Üniversitesi'nden meslektaşları tarafından yürütülen bir araştırma, pozun ölümden sonra suya batmanın bir sonucu olduğunu öne sürüyor.[5] Tavuk leşlerini suya koyduktan saniyeler sonra, cesetler "ölüm pozu" aldı. Bağların ve tendonların tipik pozisyonlarına büzülmesine izin vermek için sürtünmenin azaltılması, hayvanın başının ve kuyruğunun dorsofleksiyonuna neden olur. Ayrıca tavukların pençelerinin muhtemelen aynı nedenden dolayı kasıldığını buldular (sudaki sürtünmenin azalması bağların orijinal pozisyonlarına dönmesine izin verir ve ölüm, boynu ve pençeleri yaşamın farklı pozisyonlarında tutacak kas gerginliğini serbest bırakır). Deney, aynı sonuçları veren bir emu ile tekrarlandı. Tavukların boyunlarının omurlararası bağları kesildiğinde ölüm pozunu almadılar.

2012 yılında, paleontologlar Achim G. Reisdorf ve Michael Wuttke, ölüm pozlarıyla ilgili bir çalışma yayınladılar. Bu çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, sözde "opistonik duruş", kas spazmlarına neden olan bir beyin hastalığının sonucu değildir ve aynı zamanda hızlı bir cenaze töreni de değildir. Daha ziyade, peri-mortem daldırma, Ligamentum elastikiyetinin başı ve kuyruğu geri çekmesini sağlayan kaldırma kuvvetiyle sonuçlandı.[6]
