Tim Paterson (d. 1956), Amerikalı bilgisayar programcısı. MS-DOS işletim sisteminin temeli olan QDOS'u yazan kişidir.

Washington Üniversitesi'nde öğrenciyken Seattle, Washington'da bir bilgisayar dükkânında tamir teknisyeni olarak çalıştı. Haziran 1978'de mezun olduktan sonra Seattle Computer Products şirketinde tasarım mühendisi olarak işe başladı.

Bir ay sonra Intel, 8086 işlemcisini piyasaya sürdü. Kasım 1979'da SCP tarafından pazara sunulacak S-100 tabanlı 8086 işlemcili kartların tasarımı üzerinde çalışmaya başladı. Bu kartın üzerinde çalışabilen tek ticari yazılım Microsoft BASIC idi. Üzerinde gerçek bir işletim sistemi olmayan kartların satışı yavaşlamıştı. 8-bit işletim sistemleri konusunda CP/M ürünü ile isim yapmış Digital Research firmasının 8086 işlemcisi için 16-bit CP/M-86 işletim sistemini geliştimesi beklenirken Paterson, Nisan 1980 tarihinde QDOS üzerinde çalışmaya başladı. 8086 assembly kodu ile yazılmış yaklaşık 4000 satırdan oluşan, CP/M işletim sisteminin API'leriyle uyumlu QDOS 0.10 sürümü Temmuz 1980'de tamamlandı.

Aralık 1980'de Microsoft QDOS lisansını satın aldı. Nisan 1981 tarihinde Paterson, SCP'den ayrıldı ve Mayıs 1981 - Nisan 1982 arası Microsoft için çalıştı. SCP için kısa süreli ikinci bir çalışma döneminden sonra kendi şirketini, Falcon Technology adı altında kurdu. Bu şirket 1986 tarihinde Microsoft tarafından satın alındı. Paterson 1986-1988 ve 1990-1998 olmak üzere iki dönem daha Microsoft için çalıştı.

Daha sonra Paterson Technology adında bir yazılım şirketi kurdu. Comedy Central televizyon programı Battlebots'da yer aldı. Paterson ayrıca SCCA Pro Rally serilerine de katılmaktadır. Bir de Tim Paterson’a ait olan DosMan Drivel adında blog sayfası bulunmakta.
