Leydi[1] (İngilizce lady), Britanya Adaları'nda bir soyluluk unvanı.[2] Düşes altındaki tüm soylu kadınlar ile baron ve şövalyelerin eşleri için kullanılır.[2] Bununla birlikte günümüzde "hanımefendi" anlamında kibar bir hitap olarak tüm kadınlar için kullanılabilir.[1][3]

Etimoloji

Lady sözcüğü Eski İngilizce hlaf (ekmek) ve -dige (hamur yoğuran) sözcüklerinden gelir.[4] 1200'lü yıllarda "hlæfdige" şeklinde "evin efendisinin eşi" anlamında kullanılmaya başlanmıştır.[4] Zamanla lavede ve lafdi şekillerini almıştır. 14. yüzyılda "f" harfi de düşmüştür.[4]

Tarihçe

İngilizcede hükümdarın kızlarına "prenses" deme geleneği Hanover Hanedanı ile birlikte yerleşti. Bundan önce prenseslere "Leydi + ilk isim" şeklinde hitap ediliyordu.[2] Leydi sözcüğü gayriresmî olarak kontes, viskontes ve barones için de kullanılıyordu; ancak nerenin soylusu olduklarını belirten "of" sözcüğü leydi ile birlikte kullanıldığında düşüyordu. Örneğin "Viscountess of jersey"e (Jersey Viskontesi) kısaca Leydi Jersey deniyordu. Dük, markiz ve earl'lerin kızları için ise ad ve soyadın önüne geliyordu.[2]

Günümüzde ABD devlet başkanının eşi "First Lady" (Birinci Hanımefendi) olarak adlandırılır.
