Jamaika bayrağı resmî olarak 6 Ağustos 1962 tarihinde göndere çekilerek kullanılmaya başlanmıştır.

Bayrak, sarı renkli Aziz Andreas Haçı ve bu haçın oluşturduğu ikisi yeşil ikisi de siyah olmak üzere dört adet eşkenar üçgenden meydana gelmektedir.

Aziz Andreas Haçına renk veren sarı ülkede var olan zengin yeraltı kaynaklarını ve güneş ışınlarının yaydığı güzelliği sembolize etmektedir.[1] Bayrağın göndere çekildiği taraf ile dalgalandığı tarafta oluşan eşkenar üçgene renk veren siyah ise ülkenin geçmişte ve günümüzde yaşadığı zorlukları ve yoksulluğu ifade etmektedir. Bayrağın üst ve alt tarafında oluşan eşkenar üçgenlere renk veren yeşil ise ülkenin umutlarını ve tarım gücünün temsil etmektedir.[2]

Tarihi

Ülke 1962 yılında Batı Hint Adaları Federasyonu'ndan elde ettiği bağımsızlık sonrası bir yarışma açılmış ve 300'den fazla başvuru olmuştur. Ancak bu bayrakta karar kılınmıştır.[3] İlk tavsiye edilen bayraklardan bir tanesi beş adet yatay şeritten oluşmaktaydı. Sarı, yeşil ve siyah renklerdeki bu şeritler ile oluşturulan bayrak, 1961 yılında bağımsızlığına kavuşan Tanganika Cumhuriyeti (günümüzde Tanzanya sınırları içerisinde bölge) ile şerit oranları hariç, renk sıralamasına kadar benzerlik gösterdiği için kabul edilmemiştir.[4] Aynı şekilde üç renkli yatay yeşil, sarı, siyah bayrakta kabul görmemiş, sonuç olarak günümüzde de kullanılan bayrak ülkenin bayrağı olarak göndere çekilmiştir.
