Evrenin ivmelenerek genişlemesi, belli bir mesafedeki bir galaksinin gözlemciden sürekli olarak, zamanla artan bir hızla uzaklaşmasından yola çıkılarak gözlemlenen evrenin genişlemesi olayıdır.[1][2][3] Evrenin ivmelenerek genişlemesi 1998'de, Supernova Cosmology Project ve High-Z Supernova Search Team olmak üzere birbirlerinden bağımsız iki proje tarafından tespit edilmiştir. Her iki projede de ivmelenmenin ölçümü için tip Ia süpernovalar kullanılmıştır.[4][5] Bunun nedeni, bu tip süpernovaların neredeyse aynı iç parlaklığa sahip olmaları (standart mum) ve bunlardan uzak olan nesnelerin daha donuk görünmeleri sebebiyle, bu tip süpernovaların parlaklıklarının daha net gözlemlenebilmesidir. 2011'de Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt ve Adam Riess, "uzak süpernovaların incelenmesi sonucunda evrenin ivmelenerek genişlemesini keşiflerinden dolayı" Nobel Fizik Ödülü'nü paylaşmışlardır.[6][7]
