Deep Purple, 1968'de Londra'da kurulmuş bir İngiliz rock grubudur.[1] Heavy metal ve modern hard rock müziğinin öncüleri arasında kabul edilen Deep Purple'ın müzik tarzı, grubun uzun kariyeri boyunca değişikliklere uğramıştır.[2][3][4] Başlangıçta psikedelik ve progresif rock grubu olarak kurulan Deep Purple, 1970 tarihli Deep Purple in Rock albümüyle daha ağır bir tarza geçiş yaptı.[5] Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin ve Black Sabbath, "70'lerin başından ortasına kadar İngiliz hard rock ve heavy metalinin büyük üçlüsü" olarak anılır.[6] Grup, 1972'de Londra'daki Rainbow Theatre konseriyle "dünyanın en yüksek sesli grubu" olarak 1975 Guinness Rekorlar Kitabı'na girdi ve dünya çapında 100 milyondan fazla albüm sattı.[7][8][9][10][11]

Deep Purple, kariyeri boyunca çeşitli kadro değişiklikleri geçirdi ve çalışmalarına sekiz yıllık bir ara (1976-1984) da verdi. Grubun 1968-1976 yılları arasındaki ilk dönemini oluşturan ilk dört kadroya resmî olarak Mark I (1968-1969), Mark II (1969-1973), Mark III (1973-1975) ve Mark IV (1975-1976) denir.[12][13] Jon Lord (klavye), Ian Paice (davul) ve Ritchie Blackmore'a (gitar) Ian Gillan (vokal) ve Roger Glover'ın (bas) katılmasıyla oluşan Mark II, ticari açıdan en başarılı kadroydu. Grubun kurucu üyelerinden oluşan Mark I'de ise Lord, Paice ve Blackmore'a Rod Evans (vokal) ve Nick Simper (bas) eşlik ediyordu. Mark III'te Gillan'ın yerini David Coverdale (vokal) ve Glover'ın yerini Glenn Hughes (bas ve vokal) alırken, Mark IV'te Blackmore'un yerine Tommy Bolin (gitar) geçti. Mark II kadrosu, 1984-1989 ve 1992-1993 yılları arasında yeniden canlandı. Aradaki 1989-1992 döneminde ise Gillan'ın yerine Joe Lynn Turner (vokal) görev yaptı. Mark II, Blackmore'un Deep Purple'dan ikinci ve son kez ayrıldığı 1993 yılında kesin olarak sona erdi. Blackmore'un yerine önce geçici olarak Joe Satriani (gitar), ardından kalıcı olarak Steve Morse (gitar) getirildi. 2002'de Lord'un yerini Don Airey (klavye) aldı ve böylece yirmi yıl boyunca değişmeyecek en uzun soluklu kadrosu oluştu. 2022'de gruptan ayrıldığını açıklayan Morse'un yerini Simon McBride (gitar) aldı. Deep Purple'ın şu anki kadrosu Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Don Airey ve Simon McBride'dan oluşuyor.

Deep Purple, VH1 kanalının En Büyük Hard Rock Sanatçıları programında 22. sırada yer aldı[14] ve Planet Rock radyo istasyonunun düzenlediği ankette "dünyanın en etkili grupları" arasında 5. sıraya yerleşti.[15] Grup, 2008 Dünya Müzik Ödülleri'nde Efsane Ödülü'nü aldı. Deep Purple (Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Evans ve Hughes) 2016'da Rock and Roll Hall of Fame'e kabul edildi.
