İnert gaz

İnert gaz veya atıl gaz, belirli şartlar altında kimyasal reaksiyona girmeyen bir gazdır. Soy gazlar ve azot, genellikle birçok madde ile tepkimeye girmezler.[1] İnert gazlar, genel olarak istenmeyen kimyasal reaksiyonların numuneyi etkilemelerini önlemek için kullanılır. Bu arzu edilmeyen kimyasal tepkimeler, genellikle havadaki oksijen ve nemden oluşan oksidasyon ve hidroliz reaksiyonlarıdır. Azot gazı ve bazı soy gazlar belirli koşullarda tepkimeye yol açabilir ve bu nedenle inert gaz terimi kullanıldığı kapsama bağlıdır.

Doğada bol miktarda bulunması (havada %78 N2, %1 Ar) ve düşük göreceli maliyeti nedeniyle saflaştırılmış azot ve argon gazı, en yaygın kullanılan inert gazlardır. İnert gaz, soy gazların aksine elemental olmayabilir ve çoğu zaman bir bileşik gazıdır.
