Pinaghihingalaang pinanggalingan ng salitang "ma"

Ang etimolohiya (pinagmulan ng salita) ay ang pag-aaral ng kasaysayan ng mga salita at kung paano nag-iba ang kanilang anyo at kahulugan sa paglipas ng panahon.

Para sa mga wika na may napakahabang nakasulat na kasaysayan, ang mga etimoloho ay gumagamit ng teksto ng mga wikang ito, at mga teksto tungkol sa wikang ito, para makakuha ng kaalaman kung paano nagagamit ang mga salita noong sinauna, at kung kailan ang mga salita ay naging bahagi ng isang wika. Ang mga etimoloho ay gumagamit ng proseso ng komparatibong lingguwistika para makagawa ng mga direktang koneksiyon sa inang wika nito. Sa ganitong paraan, ang mga salitang ugat ay puwedeng makuha ang pinanggalingan, halimbawa na lang, ang pamilyang Indo-Europeo.

Kahit na ang mga etimolohikal na saliksik ay galing sa mga pilohikal sa gawain, ngayon karamihan ng mga etimolohikal na pananaliksik ay ayn sa mga mga pamilyang wika na kung saan maliit na impormasyon lang ang makukuha, gaya ng Ularic at Austronesyo.

Etimolohiya ng 'etimolohiya'

Ang salitang "etimolohiya" ay mula sa Griyegong salitang ἐτυμολογία (etumologia)[1] na mula sa mga salitang ἔτυμον (etumon), "may ibig-sabihin" o "may kahulugan" + -λογία (-logia), "pag-aaral ng", mula sa salitang λόγος (logos), "pagsasalita, orasyon, salita".[2] Ang Kastilang manunulat na si Pindar ay gumawa ng magandang mga etimolohiya noong panahon niya. Si Plutarch ay gumawa ng mga etimolohiya batay sa mga pagkakatulad ng mga salita. Ang Etymologiae ni Isidore ng Seville ay isang ensiklopedikong paghanap ng mga bagay na hindi masyadong gamit sa Europa hanggang ika-16 na siglo. Ang Etymologicum genuinum ay isang gramatikong ensiklopedya na binago sa Constantinople noong ika-9 na siglo, isa sa mga katulad na lathala noon.
