Motkolvsmotor

En motkolvsmotor har två kolvar som går mot varandra i varje cylinder. En motkolvsmotor har således två vevaxlar.

I regel brukar en motkolvsmotor vara en tvåtaktsmotor där en kolv styr överströmningskanalerna och den andra kolven styr avgasportarna. Både överströmmare och avgasportar sitter som en ring runt cylinderloppet

En motkolvsmotor har många fördelar:

  • Större total portarea.
  • Avgaserna trycks ut i ett rakt flöde längs med cylinderloppet, vilket leder till en mer fullständig tömning och fyllning av cylindern.
  • Porttiderna kan göras asymmetriska vilket är önskvärt. Det vill säga att avgasport öppnar först, och överströmmarna stänger sist.
  • Bättre termisk verkningsgrad på grund av att en större andel av förbränningsrummets yta består av kolvar och en mindre andel energi behöver kylas bort.
  • Högt vridmoment.

Nackdelarna med en motkolvsmotor:

  • Dyrare att producera
  • Lång motor
  • Högre friktion

Motkolvsmotorn som bland annat satt i Stridsvagn S och Bandkanonen var en Rolls-Royce typ K 60 dieselmotor på 240 hk (SAE) och ett vridmoment på 530 Nm vid 2300 rpm. Denna motkolvsmotor var från början framtagen som lastbilsmotor för det brittiska försvaret.
