Fredrik III (som tysk kung Fredrik IV), född 21 september 1415 i Innsbruck, död 19 augusti 1493 i Linz, var tysk-romersk kejsare från 1452 och från 1424 hertig av Österrike, Steiermark och Krain (som Fredrik V).

Biografi

Fredrik var son till Ernst I av Österrike och Cymburge av Masovien. Fredriks ungdom förflöt under inre slitningar i Österrike. Efter kung Albrekt II:s död 1439 var han habsburgska ättens huvudman. År 1440 valdes han till romersk kung och kröntes 1442 i Aachen.

Fredrik intog en vacklande ställning i den pågående påvestriden men slöt 1447–48 konkordat med Eugenius IV. Fredriks inre regering var fylld av oro. Hans försök att kuva schweizarna med armagnaktrupper väckte opposition. Vid hemkomsten från sin kejsarkröning i Rom 1452 fann han uppror organiserat, som måste stillas genom eftergifter. Fredrik höll sig utanför Tysklands inre strider. Flera gånger försökte tronpretendenter störta honom, men oenighet bland furstarna räddade hans rike. Bland hans lojala furstar fanns Albrekt Akilles av Brandenburg. Fredriks österrikiska släktingar, Georg av Böhmen, men särskilt Mattias I Corvinus av Ungern orsakade honom avbräck och nederlag.

Karl den djärve tillskansade sig fördelar på rikets bekostnad mot att hans dotter Maria 1477 förmäldes med Fredriks son Maximilian. År 1485 erövrade Mattias Corvinus Wien och större delen av Österrike. Året därpå upphöjdes Maximilian till Fredriks medregent och återtog 1490 habsburgarnas arvländer från ungrarna. Fredrik III avled 1493.[6]

Han var en stillsam och filosofisk natur och anses ha varit väl svag för den krävande kejsarvärdigheten.[6]
