Kartagina in njene posesti

Antična Kartagina je bila antična civilizacija, ki je nastala iz feničanskega polisa Kartagine, blizu današnjega mesta Tunisa. Ustanovili so jo 814 pr. n. št. kolonisti iz Tira, a je dobila neodvisnost okoli leta 650 pr. n. št. in vzpostavila oblast nad drugimi feničanskimi kolonijami v današnji Španiji, Italiji in severni Afriki, ki je trajala do leta 146 pr. n. št. Na vrhuncu svoje moči je Kartagina obvladovala največji del zahodnega Sredozemlja in štela od 3 do 4 milijone ljudi. Do 5. stoletja pr. n. št. se je Kartagina razvila v gospodarski center regije.

Kartagina je bila od 3. st. pr. n. št. v neprestanem spopadu z Rimsko republiko, kar je pripeljalo do niza vojn, ki jih imenujemo Punske vojne. Po tretji in zadnji punski vojni, so Kartagino leta 146 pr. n. št. zasedle in uničile rimske legije.
