Vlajka štátu Kalifornia

Vlajka štátu Kalifornia, nazývaná Bear Flag (Medvedia vlajka), bola v súčasnej podobe prijatá v roku 1911, jej história však siaha až do roku 1846.[1]

Opis

Vlajka Kalifornie má biely list, v ktorého strede je medveď grizzly idúci smerom k žrdi. Pod ním je nápis California Republic (Kalifornská republika). V dolnej časti vlajky je vodorovný červený pruh a v žrďovom hornom rohu je červená päťramenná hviezda.

Symbolika

Kalifornský grizzly (čo je i oficiálne štátne zviera) symbolizuje silu, hviezda reprezentuje zvrchovanosť, červená farba znamená odvahu a biele pozadie čistotu.

História

Medvedia vlajka po prvýkrát zaviala dňa 14. júna 1846 v meste Sonoma, keď sa americký osadníci vzbúrili proti mexickej vláde (tzv. Vzbura Medvedej vlajky). Krátko nato vydali prehlásenie o nezávislosti Republiky Kalifornie od Mexika. Vlajka však viala len do 9. júla 1846, keď už Spojené štáty boli vo vojne s Mexikom. Skoro potom bola Medvedia vlajka nahradená vlajkou Spojených štátov amerických. Oficiálnou vlajkou štátu Kalifornia sa Medvedia vlajka stala až v roku 1911.

Autorom pôvodnej Medvedej vlajky z roku 1846 bol William Todd, synovec Mary Todd Lincoln, manželky Abrahama Lincolna.
