Národný cintorín v Martine je miestom posledného odpočinku mnohých významných osobností slovenského života. Nachádza sa v centre mesta na Sklabinskej ulici. Bol založený koncom 18. storočia pôvodne ako mestský cintorín. V roku 1967 bol vyhlásený za Národný cintorín a národnú kultúrnu pamiatku. Svoj celonárodný význam si získal v druhej polovici 19. storočia, keď bola starostlivosť oň zverená Matici slovenskej. Martin ako miesto Národného cintorína nebol vybraný náhodne, v 19. storočí bol totiž strediskom slovenskej kultúry.

História

Založenie cintorína súviselo s osvietenskými reformami 18. storočia. V roku 1785 bol vykonaný súpis cintorínov a krýpt. Z tohto dokumentu je známe, že cintorín v Martine založili pred piatimi rokmi a toto je zatiaľ prvý známy doklad o jeho existencii. Prvým Martinčanom, o ktorom je správa, bol Ján Lauček. Cintorín slúžil aj pre obyvateľov priľahlých obcí Jahodníky, Tomčany a Dolina (dnes už mestské časti). Cintorín sa pomaly zapĺňal, preto sa v roku 1865 po dohode s rodinou Révaiovcov rozšíril o ďalší pozemok. No i tento priestor sa čoskoro zaplnil. A tak 8. júla 1903 za richtára Samuela Šimka mesto kúpilo od baróna Júliusa Révaia za 1000 korún pozemok s výmerou 1 katastrálneho jutra na rozšírenie cintorína. O krátky čas, v roku 1909, v obecnom zastupiteľstve rokovali o kúpe ďalšieho pozemku, ktorého vlastníkom bol taktiež barón Július Révai. Išlo o malý kus zeme na zarovnanie pôdorysu cintorína, ktorý kúpili za 300 korún. Uvedenému vývinu zodpovedajú mapové zobrazenia cintorína z rôznych období. Po takýchto krokoch nadobudol dnešné rozmery. Po ďalšom mapovaní v roku 1912 bol do pozemkovej knihy zapísaný ako parcela č. 1878/1 s výmerou 23 580 m2.

Cintorín dnes tvoria dve parcely a jeho plochu rozdeľujú hlavné uličky do šiestich blokov.
