Holocén (iné názvy mladšie štvrtohory, postglaciál, poľadová doba; zastarano alúvium, mladšie náplavy; v nordickom a britskom systéme zaľadnenia interglaciál flandr) je najmladšia časť kvartéru, ktorá trvá dodnes.

Datovanie

Holocén zahŕňa posledných cca 11 600 – 11 800 rokov (= od 9600 – 9800 pred Kr.). Presnejšie datovania začiatku:

  • novšie:
    • 11700 pred rokom 2000 (=9700 pred Kr.) +/− 99 rokov [1]
    • 11703 pred rokom 2000 (=9703 pred Kr.) +/−52 alebo 11702 pred rokom 2000 (=9702 pred Kr.) [2]

Charakteristika

Z historického hľadiska teda zahŕňa približne polovicu neskorého paleolitu, ďalej mezolit a ďalšie obdobia až dodnes.

Delenie

Niekedy sa holocén delí na starý, stredný a mladý, ale najbežnejšie je delenie na klimatické obdobia (od najmladšieho po najstaršie):

Takéto delenie sa v posledných rokov ukázalo ako nezodpovedajúce skutočnému klimatickému vývoju (preto sa používa prakticky už len v severnej Európe, kde aj vzniklo), ale iné podobne jednoduché delenie zatiaľ neexistuje.
