Hérodotos (iné názvy: Herodotos, Hérodot, Herodot; * okolo 484 pred Kr., Halikarnassos (Malá Ázia) – † 430 pred Kr., Thúrioi (južná Itália) alebo Atény), gr. Ἡρόδοτος - Hérodotos) bol grécky historik, geograf, etnograf a filozof dejín, „otec dejepisu“ (takto ho nazval rímsky politik a rečník Marcus Tullius Cicero). Mladosť strávil na ostrove Samos, po nastolení tyranidy v Halikarnasse ušiel do Atén a neskôr sa usadil v južnej Itálii. Atény poznal v období Periklovej demokracie. Navštívil (azda už pred aténskym pobytom) Egypt, Prednú Áziu, Čiernomorie i africkú Kyrénu; koniec života prežil v južnej Itálii (Thúrioi). Poznatky z ciest uplatnil v diele „Historiés Apodexis“ (9 kníh), ktoré koncipoval ako odveký boj Grékov s barbarmi. Zmysel dejín videl v úsilí o neustálu rovnováhu. Herodotos preniesol ťažisko záujmu na politické dejiny.

Dielo

Herodotove Dejiny sú prvým zachovaným dielom gréckej historiografie. Opísal v nich základný konflikt medzi Perzskou ríšou a Gréckom – tzv. grécko-perzské vojny. Okrem základného konfliktu opísal aj predchádzajúce udalosti, dejiny jednotlivých národov (Médi, Peržania, Egypťania, Skýti, Gréci), ktorých sa konflikt týkal a často používal aj opisy jednotlivých krajín, ktoré poznal väčšinou z vlastných ciest (Malá Ázia, Egypt – II. kniha). Zatiaľ čo Peržanov označil za národ, ktorý sa podriaďuje despotickej moci svojich kráľov, u Grékov si cení predovšetkým ich lásku k slobode a demokracii.

Ako hlavné udalosti opísal predovšetkým iónske povstanie v Malej Ázii, priebeh grécko-perzských vojen a bitku pri Termopylách. Dielo rozdelil do deviatich kníh a každú nazval menom jednej z Múz.

Slovenský preklad vyšiel vo vydavateľstve Tatran, Bratislava 1985, preložil ho Július Špaňár.
