Ellis Island

Ellis Island je ostrov pri ústí rieky Hudson neďaleko New Yorku v USA. Od 1. januára 1892 do 12. novembra 1954 fungoval ako prisťahovalecká stanica pre imigrantov do USA. Je majetkom federálnej vlády a teraz je súčasťou Národnej pamiatky Sochy Slobody, ktorá podlieha federálnej agentúre National Park Service. Ellis Island bol tiež predmetom hraničného sporu medzi štátmi New York a New Jersey. Rozkladá sa prevažne v Jersey City (New Jersey), aj keď malou časťou svojho územia spadá do susedného New York City. Má rozlohu 0,24 km².

Imigrácia

V rokoch 1892 až 1954 prešlo cez Ellis Island viac ako 12 miliónov prisťahovalcov. Prví prisťahovalci, ktorí 1. januára 1892 prešli Ellis Islandom, bola Annie Mooreová, pätnásťročná bývalá žiačka z írskeho Corku, a jej dvaja bratia. Prišli do Ameriky za svojimi rodičmi, ktorí sa presťahovali do New Yorku o dva roky skôr. Dostala želanie od úradníkov a 10,00 dolárov[1]. Posledný, kto prešiel Ellis Islandom bol nórsky obchodný námorník menom Arne Peterssen roku 1954. Po schválení zákona National Origins Act (1924), mohli ostrovom prejsť iba presídlené osoby alebo vojnoví utečenci.[2] Dnes viac ako 100 miliónov Američanov môže vystopovať svoj pôvod k imigrantom vďaka nadácii Ellis Island, ktorá zdigitalizovala pôvodné záznamy[3].
