Satelitný pohľad na oblasť Egejského mora

Egejské more (neodborne nazývané aj archipelagos) je polouzatvorené okrajové more v Atlantickom oceáne, patriace k Stredozemnému moru. Nachádza sa medzi Balkánskym polostrovom, Malou Áziou a Krétou. Patrí medzi najčistejšie moria.

Jeho bazén je široký asi 610 km zo severu na juh a 300 km z východu na západ. V mori sa nachádza veľké množstvo ostrovov, z ktorých je najväčšia Kréta. Patria k nemu súostrovia Kyklady, Východoegejské ostrovy, Eubója, Severné Sporady, Argosarónske ostrovy a Dodekanézy. Na severovýchode je more cez Dardanely, Marmarské more a Bospor prepojené s Čiernym morom.

Geológia

Oblasť sa vyznačuje stenčenou kontinentálnou kôrou, vysokým tepelným tokom (a s tým spojenou vulkanickou činnosťou) a vysokou seizmicitou. Zemetrasenia majú plytké až stredne hlboké hypocentrá, ktoré sledujú beniofovu-zónu ponárajúcej sa platne. Spôsobuje ich na sever smerujúca subdukcia Africkej pod Eurázijskú platňu. Kréta sa nachádza nad helénskou subdukčnou zónou v pozícií ostrovného oblúka. Do severnej časti Egejského mora zasahuje severoanatólsky zlom. Celá oblasť poklesáva približne od neogénu[1].
