Darkthrone je nórska blackmetalová skupina založená v roku 1987. Pôvodne bola však deathmetalová, ako aj prvý album Soulside Journey. Nasledujúci album Blaze in the Northern Sky už bol hlavne black metal a Under a Funeral Moon znamenal totálnu konverziu z predchádzajúceho štýlu. Under a Funeral Moon, vydaný v roku 1993, je pokladaný za základný kameň druhej vlny black metalu. Spolu s albumom Transilvanian Hunger sa vyznačujú veľmi nízkou kvalitou zvuku a produkcie, čo je veľmi typické pre skupiny tej doby, keďže black metal bol stále veľmi undergroundový.
