Zellers is a Canadian company formerly owned by the Hudson's Bay Company. They were headquartered in Brampton, Ontario. Until 2013, Zellers was Canada's second-largest chain of mass merchandise department stores.[2] There are currently two Zellers locations, one in Edmonton, Alberta, and another in Toronto, Ontario.

History

In 2011, the leaseholds of 189 Zellers stores were taken over by Target Corporation. Target got the leaseholds because they were expanding their stores into Canada in 2013 and 2014. HBC said that most Zellers stores would close and the Zellers banner would be retired from Canadian retail by March 31, 2013.[3]

The last two Zellers stores, located in Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, closed on January 26, 2020.[4][5]

Zellers 2.0

In 2023, Hudson's Bay Company announced that Zellers would return as a pop-up inside their stores across Canada. [6] [7] [8] When HBC closed all of their stores in early 2025, the Zellers pop-ups closed along with them.

Zellers 3.0

On October 30, 2025, Zellers was revived as a full-sized store at Londonberry Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, under the ownership of Les Ailes de la Mode, with plans to expand across Canada being announced in January 2026. This version of the brand has been nicknamed “Zellers 3.0”. [9] In June 2026, it was announced that two brick-and-mortar Zellers stores would open in Toronto and Windsor, Ontario.[10] The Toronto location opened on June 18, 2026.[11]

Zellers’ mascot is a teddy bear named Zeddy. Zellers’ former slogan, “Where the lowest price is the law!”, was acquired by Canadian Tire in 2025, along with many other assets owned by HBC.
