Yungngora
Yungngora is an Aboriginal community in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is located on the banks of the Fitzroy River. Yungngora is about 280 kilometers east-south-east of Broome and about 100 kilometers southwest of Fitzroy Crossing.
The community is home to people from different language groups, including the Nyikina and Walmajarri people. Yungngora's name comes from a nearby billabong (a small lake that forms in a river).
As of 2016, Yungngora had a population of 378.[1]

History
Yungngora was established in the late 1970s by elders who wanted to return to their traditional land. Many Aboriginal people who worked on cattle stations faced poor conditions and low wages. After the 1967 referendum, which aimed to improve Aboriginal rights, many people sought to reclaim their connection to their land.
The land where Yungngora is located was once part of Noonkanbah Station. In 1976, the Noonkanbah pastoral lease was bought for the community. This was a significant step towards self-determination and cultural revival for the Yungngora people. In April 2007, the Yungngora people had their native title recognized, affirming their rights to the land.
Demographics
Yungngora has a population of around 378 people in 2016. The main languages spoken are Kriol, Walmajarri, Nyikina, and English. Many children attend Kulkarriya Community School, where English is often a second or third language.
Facilities
Yungngora has essential services for its residents:
- Kulkarriya Community School: Provides education for primary and secondary students.
- Health Clinic: Offers medical services.
- Health and Aged Care (HAAC) kitchen and office: Provides meals for the elderly.
- Community Store: Sells food and other necessities.
- Airstrip: For transport to and from the community.
- Recreation: Includes basketball courts and a football oval.
