Witching hour

Witches' Sabbath, illustrated by Émile Bayard, 1870

In folklore, the witching hour is the period associated with witches, ghosts, demons, hauntings and macabre/supernatural moments, from 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM.[1][2][3]

History

The connection of hags with midnight is grounded in legendary convictions that paranormal occurrences are most widespread at specific periods of the day and year. Similar to periodic milestones, such as the solstices and equinoxes, midnight was thought to summon enchantment, permitting erratic and potentially wicked incidents. It is claimed that during the occult window the divide between the existent and the deceased becomes fuzzy, and the breathing are more susceptible to the ghosts of the departed. Enchantresses, warlocks, and sprites were among the entities and personages presumed to possess greater potencies during these intervals and to perform their misdeeds or shadowy rituals after dark.

Certain notions establish the witching hour’s limits:

  • From midnight to 1:00 AM or;[4]
  • From midnight to 3:00 AM or;
  • From 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM.

Scriptural citations regarding the passing of Jesus Christ of Nazareth were reckoned as having transpired at 3:00 PM. Recognizing this estimation, the reversal or contrary of this moment was then regarded as the devil's hour.[5]
