Dr. Walter Schleger (19 September 1929 – 3 December 1999) was an Austrianfootball player. He played as forward for Wiener Sport-Club and FK Austria Wien. He also played in the Austrian national football team. After his football career he was University professor for animal breeding, genetics and cynology at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
After the end of his football career, the veterinarian, who earned his doctorate in 1956, turned to animal breeding, genetics and cynology. He qualified as a professor in 1973. In 1976 he became head of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Genetics at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. From 1977 to 1996 he also headed the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Immuno- and Cytogenetic Research. He set up this scientific research facility.
