It was released on March 2, 2000, in North America,[1] April 2000 in Europe[1] and on August 8, 2000, in Japan.[1] The game was the first game in the WWF SmackDown! video game series. It was the first WWF game on the PlayStation to be published by THQ who took over from the previous publisher Acclaim Entertainment. It was followed by WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role.
IGN rated the game a 8.8 out of 10 and said "It gives some to the N64 WrestleMania game's tighter controls and crisper animation, but SmackDown is no slouch in either department, and it even bests WrestleMania in graphics and features.”[15]
GameSpot gave the game a 8.7 out of 10 and stated "The little things that debut in SmackDown, such as a never-ending season mode and inklings of a plot, really make the game feel fresh and new."[16]
