Vladimir Arnold (12 June 1937 — 3 June 2010) was a Russianmathematician of Jewish descent,[1] said to be one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.[2] He worked in many areas of mathematics including dynamical systems, differential equations, hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, classical and celestial mechanics, geometry, topology, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and singularity theory.[3]
Arnold was born in Odesa, Ukraine. He worked at the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow and later at the Moscow State University.[2] Arnold died in Paris after going there to seek medical treatment.[2]
