King "Val" Valkyrie, also known as Scrapper 142, is a character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), portrayed by actress Tessa Thompson. Based on the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name and based on the Norse mythological figure of the same name, she first appears in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and plays a significant role in the movie as a skilled warrior who originally served as a Valkyrie, part of an elite group of female Asgardian warriors tasked with protecting Asgard and its people.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Valkyrie, whose Asgardian name is Brunnhilde, has become a bounty hunter on the planet Sakaar after being traumatized by her past experiences during a battle against Hela, the Goddess of Death. Throughout the movie, she assists Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in his efforts to escape Sakaar and return to Asgard to confront Hela.
Valkyrie's character is notable for her strength, independence, and a complex backstory that explores themes of trauma and redemption. She also exhibits a strong sense of loyalty and courage, ultimately choosing to help Thor and the people of Asgard despite her initial reluctance.
In the subsequent movie, Avengers: Endgame (2019), she plays a part in the Avengers' battle against Thanos. She later appears in the post-credits scene of the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), as well as in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), where she continues to develop her character further.
Valkyrie is depicted as a powerful and charismatic leader, particularly as she becomes the ruler of New Asgard, and her presence adds to the diverse representation of characters in the MCU. The character's evolution and her interactions with other characters, particularly Thor and the Asgardian community, continue to make her a fan-favorite within the franchise.
