Trisquel GNU/Linux is a free and open-source Linux distribution for 64-bit computers. It is based on Ubuntu and does not use any proprietary software. The Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project both recognize it as one of the few distributions that run on 100% free software.
Trisquel runs on the Linux-libre kernel, a fork of the Linux kernel with non-free code removed.
The first release of Trisquel was in 2007. It is still actively developed.
Trisquel Versions
Four versions of Trisquel are available:
- Trisquel, the default experience with the MATE desktop environment.
- Trisquel Mini, a lightweight alternative using LXDE for the desktop.
- Triskel, which has the KDE desktop.
- Trisquel Sugar TOAST, which has the Sugar desktop environment used by children for interactive learning.
- Trisquel Netinstall, a smaller ISO image that runs a text-based installer. It is also good for creating lightweight installations which do not have a GUI by default.
