The New Capital (Egyptian Arabic: العاصمة الجديدة, romanized: el-ʿĀṣima el-Gedīda) is a new urban community east of New Cairo in Cairo Governorate, Egypt.[1][2]
As of May 2023, 14 ministries and government bodies have been relocated there.[3][4]
Background
On 2 April 2024, president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took the constitutional oath for a third consecutive term in office, officially inaugurating the new capital city as the seat of Egyptian government.[5][6]
It was announced by then-Egyptian housing minister Moustafa Madbouly at the Egypt Economic Development Conference on 13 March 2015.[7] The city will reportedly be named Wedian, the Egyptian Arabic plural for "Wadi".[8][9][10]
