Tephritidae

An adult female fruit fly, family Tephritidae

The Tephritidae are one of two fly families known as fruit flies. The other family is the Drosophilidae.

There are nearly 5,000 species of tephritid fruit fly in almost 500 genera of the Tephritidae.[1][2] Description and genetic analyses are constantly changing the taxonomy of this family.[3] To distinguish them from the Drosophilidae, the Tephritidae are sometimes called 'peacock flies'.
