Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program: VNUM
How to use this template
This template provides unique identification of any volcano or volcanic feature on Earth which is in the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program (GVP) database, which currently has over 1550 entries. The GVP assigns a geographic identifier code, the Volcano Number or VN, for each Holocene volcano in the world according to a system originally devised by IAVCEI. Find the appropriate volcano on the GVP website, copy the Volcano Number, and use it on Wikipedia's article about that volcano via this template. Note that volcano numbers can sometimes change as volcanoes are added or deleted from the Holocene database.
The first template parameter is the Volcano Number and the second is an optional name. If the second parameter is omitted, then the Wikipedia article name is automatically displayed. The optional name should be used in those cases where the Wikipedia article name differs significantly from the GVP entry.

Placement and examples
In general, it is best to place this template in the "References" section of an article if the GVP website is a major reference for the article. In other cases where info from the GVP is only a minor part of an article, it may be more appropriate to place the template under "External links" instead.

Caution
Many Volcano Numbers end on an "equals" sign ("="), for example the volcanic island of Vulcano (Italy) has the VNUM 0101-05=, ending on an "=". If the above normal parameter syntax were used, the "=" would be understood as an operator, not a parameter. In this case, the parameter must be specified explicitly by using "1=" before the argument, as in these examples:

- {{VNUM | 1=0101-05=}} renders correctly as Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program: VNUM
- {{VNUM | 1=0101-05= | 2=Vulcano }} renders correctly as Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program: Vulcano
Note that this explicit expression is not necessary if the argument (i.e., the VNUM) contains or starts with an "=".
