Tangambalanga (pronounced TANG-əm-bəl-ANG-ə), also called Tangam, is a small town in the Shire of Indigo, Victoria, Australia. It is about 20 kilometers southeast of the city of Wodonga and 5 kilometers from the Hume Weir. In 2021, the town had 908 people living there.[1] The town is close to the Kiewa River.
History
The name Tangambalanga comes from the Aboriginal Pallanganmiddang language word for the white clawed lobster, also known as the Murray crayfish.[2] The town was once the site of an Aboriginal reserve, officially set up in 1862. A local landowner named Thomas Mitchell was the "Protector of Aborigines" for the area.[3][4] The town’s Post Office opened on December 1, 1911.[5]
Economy
Tangambalanga is in a valley and grew around a dairy and cheese factory run by the Murray Goulburn Co-operative. This factory made fresh milk, butter, and cheese. However, the factory was announced to close in May 2017.[6]
The town has many facilities including a child care center, kindergarten, swimming pool, football and cricket fields, a vet clinic, a mechanic, Kiewa Valley Primary School, two general stores, a pharmacy, and a hotel.
