Tage Nathaniel Thompson (born October 30, 1997) is an American professional ice hockey center. He currently plays for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL) and serves as an alternate captain. He has also played for the the St. Louis Blues.

Thompson is a one-time All-Star, being named one in 2023.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Thompson played parts of two years with the UConn Huskies of Hockey East.

He was drafted 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2016 NHL entry draft. On March 7, 2017, he signed a three-year, entry-level contract to join the Blues.[1] He was immediatly sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Rockford IceHogs. On October 4, 2017, the Blues called Thompson up and he made his NHL debut later that night in a 5–4 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.[2] On December 21, Thompson scored his first career NHL goal against Cam Talbot in a 3–2 loss against the Edmonton Oilers.[3]

On July 1, 2018, the Blues traded Thompson along with Patrik Berglund, Vladimír Sobotka, a 2019 first-round draft pick, and a 2021 second-round draft pick to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Ryan O'Reilly.[4] On October 5, 2020, Thompson signed a three-year, $4.2 million contract to stay with the Sabres.[5] On February 19, 2022, he scored his first NHL career hat-trick in a 5–3 loss against the Colorado Avalanche.[6] On August 30, Thompson signed a seven-year, $50 million contract to stay with the Sabres.[7] On December 7, 2022, Thompson scored five goals in a game, which included four of them in the first period. He was only the fourth player in NHL history to accomplish this and he also tied a Sabres record after recording an assist and earning six points on the night.[8]

Personal life

Thompson's father Brent was also a professional ice hockey player, playing 121 games in the NHL. Tage was born when his father was playing for the Phoenix Coyotes.[9] Thompson is a Christian.[10]
