Survivalcraft

Survivalcraft is a sandbox video game created and published in 2011[1] by the Polish developer Marcin Igor Kalicinski, who created the brand Candy Rufus Games and released the game under that name. It is similar to Minecraft regarding gameplay, but is different in some ways. The player has to defend themselves on an island while trying to keep themselves alive.

The game is available on Windows Mobile, Android, iOS, Kindle Fire, and Windows. It received its sequel, Survivalcraft 2 in 2016.[2]

Gameplay

Story

In the beginning of the game, the player is thrown off a ship by a group of unknown people, likely pirates, onto an island or continent and is told that they will be left there forever, highlighting that they are not going to return for them.

Mechanics

The player can create new tools from the material from thearound them. In the beginning of the game, this can be done by using a 4x4 interface that is supposed to be similar to hand-crafting. Very soon after, the player gets access to a 9x9 interface using a block known as a Crafting Table, making the 4x4 mostly unused afterwards.

The game features a large range of biomes. These biomes differ in temperature and humidity. Often, if the player is not careful enough, they may get deep into a snowy biome. If this happens, and the player is not prepared, they may freeze to death.

Unlike Minecraft, the game does not contain supernatural creatures (except werewolves). However, in most gamemodes, the player has to pay attention to the animals around them instead. Regarding some animals, if they player gets too close, they might become aggressive and attack the players (however, in Harmless and Creative, this is not the case). Some animals become more aggressive at night.

Most animals also have pathfinding AI. This means that they can find a way to get to something they need or want by themselves. Because of this, the player might die if they are in an open space where animals can get in at night.

Although mostly used in Creative mode, the game has electricity. However, unlike Minecraft, it is more complex, as it contains LEDs, shooting targets, wires through blocks, 7-segment displays, and motion detectors, among others.

There is a community tab in the main menu of the game, where one can download texture packs, worlds, character skins, and from Survivalcraft 2, one can also download furniture packs.

The statistics regarding the player's health, tiredness, hunger, humidity and level can be viewed through the character menu, where there is also a suicide button, in case the player gets stuck in a place they can't get out of.

Day one

The day one (formerly demo) version is the free version of Survivalcraft 1 and 2. It introduces several limits:

  • Downloading and publishing worlds through the community tab is not possible
  • Publishing any form of content on the community tab is also not possible
  • The game is reduced to only one in-game day. After the day is over, a message informing the player about the end of the demo appears.

Survivalcraft 2

Survivalcraft two introduces a couple of important features not found in the first game.[3]

Survivalcraft

One of these is split-screen multiplayer, where up to 4 people can play on the same device in the same world, at the same time.

Furniture are introduced; they have the same size as a regular block, however the player may shape them and create items previously not in the main game, such as chairs. They may also be interactive and/or connected to a circuit. This allows, for example, customs doors and buttons which cause certain events to happen.

The sequel also introduces various animal species, tools and items not found in the original game.

A level-based system is introduced; this causes the player to be unable to create certain items before reaching a certain level.

The game also features illness and food rot. All food rots over the course of several weeks, and eating them causes nausea and vomiting. The player may also get flu if they happen to be in a cold area for too long.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name.

History and reception

The creator of the game initially received inspiration from Minecraft, stating that he "could not put down Minecraft" and that he "had to create a game like it". However, in the beginning, he didn't think his game would receive much attention, as there were "already dozens if not hundreds of Minecraft clones on the market".[4]

The game was met with mixed reviews: some critics said that Survivalcraft is a big improvement and a unique version of Minecraft,[5] while others said it was a nothing more than "a perfectly playable minecraft clone"[6]

The game received a rating of 74 on Metacritic.[7]

Creative mode

Creative mode allows you to fly, destroy any block (Other than bedrock) and obtain any block, the other features of creative mode is you have infinite resistance, meaning you cannot die unless you fly too high or sand/gravel falls onto you in a 1x1x3 hole. [8]In creative mode you can change the weather, strike lightning in a random area, and set the time. With creative mode you can open up the inventory menu and see that your clothes don’t wear out, also in the inventory menu you can obtain any block you would like to use, from building blocks to electronics and fireworks.

2.4 update

The 2.4 update was released on December 15, 2024.

This update added Seasons, fog, Dirt slabs etc.

The four seasons in Survivalcraft are Summer, Fall (Autumn) Winter, and Spring. These seasons can be set of 6 to 84 days, and they can be optionally be allowed to change from season to season.

Summer is one of the warming seasons, after Spring, This season has absolutely no snow, warm temperatures, finding food is easier and growing crops is a lot more simpler. [9]

Fall (Autumn) Is a quite cold season, during late Autumn there is snow that piles up, Leafs change color and scavenging for food is more difficult, this includes growing crops. [10]

Winter is the hardest season to survive through, with very cold temperatures, Dangerous animals, Growing crops is hard since the water is frozen and killing animals for food is hard.

Spring is the second/third hardest, with the snow melting, animals coming back, temperatures climbing back up and crops is a bit less difficult (In early Spring)

Dirt slabs are created by breaking grass/dirt from the ground, using a crafting table, splitting the dirt, clicking on the bottom, middle or top with three dirt each to create dirt slabs. [11]

Dirt slabs can be used in homes, placing.

Werewolves

Werewolve are a much stronger version of the regular wolf (Coyotes cannot become werewolves) Since the 2.4 update they can now open wooden doors, hit buttons, pull levers etc. However they cannot open iron doors and cell doors.

Killing werewolves will drop a diamond 2%, and rotten meat 50% of the time. They are a difficult enemy to kill, with an Attack resilience (HP) of 40, attack power of 3 and their speed is 15 km/h (Mildly fast) including fire resilience of 15 and lastly 15 fall resilience.

Since they can open wooden doors I recommend using iron doors or blocking the door with any block.

The only times they can transform are at night, on a full or new moon, and transform back into regular wolves at dawn.

An easy house to create

The easiest way people can create a small home is to dig a hole into the ground (At least two blocks down and not any block affected by gravity) place a block above you and sleep in there.

Another way you can do it (I did it myself) was to collect at least 90+ leaf blocks, Placing them in a cube or rectangular prism (ceiling at least two or three blocks high) and making an entrance with a door or two. This is an easy house to make however I do not recommend doing it in the winter as it’s more cold, and since there is lightning, I recommend placing cobblestone, basalt, sandstone or any blocks that are not flammable.[12]
