Smartify is an program that identifies images to show information about art.[1]

History

In 2013, four friends started Smartify.[2] It was launched at the Royal Academy of Arts in October 2017.[3]

Some items in museums could be browsed on Smartify during the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]

Usage

Smartify is available for iOS, Android and web browsers.[2] Its owners say it is like Shazam but for art. Smartify scans an artwork and shows information about it if it can be found in its database.[3]

Audio descriptions are supported. This can make artwork more accessible for visually impaired people.[4]

Jonathan Jones, writing for The Guardian, said it is better for art to be mysterious than scanned using Smartify or similar programs.[5]
