Samuel Jones Tilden (February 19, 1814 – August 14, 1886) was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. presidency in the United States from which he lost to Rutherford B. Hayes in one of the most contentious and violent American elections in the 18th century. Tilden was also Governor of New York from January 1, 1875 through December 31, 1876.
Tilden was born on February 19, 1814 in New Lebanon, New York.[1] He studied at Yale University and at the University of New York. Tilden was never married and had no children. Tilden died on August 4, 1886 in Yonkers, New York from natural causes, aged 72. Tilden's gravestone has the phrase "I still trust the people" on it.[2]
