Roosevelt Library is a public library in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[2] It was opened in 1927.

Early years

Roosevelt Library was originally built inside Roosevelt High School.[3] It was built to serve high school students and adults.[4] In 1926, the Minneapolis Public Library bought land for the library. The building was designed after the East Lake Community Library.[3] On February 15, 1927, Roosevelt Library was opened for the first time.[5]

Later years

During World War II, librarians at Roosevelt held story times for the children of the area. This helped the children who had parents in the war.[3] In 1973, parking lot and air conditioning were added to the building.

Outlook 2010 options

Roosevelt was small by 1999. It also lacked a public meeting room and did not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.[6]

Option A

Roosevelt would combine with the Nokomis Community Library. Both Roosevelt and Nokomis would close. This plan was ruled out when Nokomis was renovated.[7]

Option B

Roosevelt would move to a larger building at a different location.

Option C

Major renovations of the Roosevelt building would be made. This would add ramps to make it wheelchair accessible. It would also replace the furnace and water heater.

Option D

Expand the Roosevelt building. This would make it comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In 1997, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. That means that it could not be destroyed or altered without approval.

Outlook 2010 aftermath

A new library was planned but never was started. Plans for renovations were made but were not successful.

Renovation

The library was closed for renovation in 2012. It reopened on June 1, 2023. The renovation had a meeting room and more electronics.
