Richard Henry Carmona (born November 22, 1949)[1] is an American physician, policeofficer, public healthadministrator, and politician. He was the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. Carmona was chosen as Surgeon General by President George W. Bush in 2002. He left office at the end of July 2006 at the end of his term. After leaving, Carmona was highly critical of the Bush administration.
In August 2006, Carmona returned home to Tucson, Arizona.[2] In November 2011, he said he would try to become the Democratic Party's choice for United States Senate.[3] He won the nomination, but lost the election to Jeff Flake.
