Renato Tirso Antonio Coronado Corona [ 1] (October 15, 1948 – April 29, 2016) was a Filipino jurist. He was the 23rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines . He served as chief from 2010 until his resignation in 2012.
Early life
Corona was born on October 15, 1948 in the Santa Ana area of Manila . He studied at Ateneo de Manila University , at Harvard University and at the University of Santo Tomas .
Career
He served as an Associate Justice after being appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on April 9, 2002. He was appointed as Chief Justice on May 12, 2010 after the retirement of Chief Justice Reynato Puno .
Corona was a law professor and member of the Cabinet under two Presidents, Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, before being appointed to the court.
Impeachment
On December 12, 2011, he was impeached by the House of Representatives .[ 2] On May 29, 2012, he was found guilty by the Senate of violating some laws of the Constitution of the Philippines . He resigned as a result.[ 3]
Death
Corona died on April 29, 2016 at The Medical City in Pasig due to complications of a heart attack , aged 67.[ 4] He suffered from kidney disease .
