Producciones Editoriales
Producciones Editoriales was a Spanish publishing company. It was based in Barcelona and started in 1970. The company published sticker albums, photonovels, cheap paperback novels, and comics. It was known for the countercultural book series Star Books.
History
Producciones Editoriales took over from an earlier company called Ferma. In 1971, it started two book series: "Bang," made up of novels by Antonio Viader, and "Super-ficción" (later renamed "Extraficción" because another publisher, Martínez Roca, already used the name "Super-ficción"). This second series focused on science fiction.[1]
The company also began publishing genre comics, such as "Combate" (1972, about war), "Horror" (1973, horror comics), "África Salvaje" (1974, adventure comics), and "Sendas Salvajes" (1974, western comics).[2]
Starting in 1974, under the direction of Juan José Fernández (the owner's son), the company kept publishing series like "Dodge Oeste" (western novels), but it also began focusing more on counterculture. It published comic magazines such as "Star" and "Bésame Mucho."
After Spain became a democracy, the company launched two more series: Documento, about politics, and Sexy Novela.
Star Books
Jaime Rosal and Juan José Fernández ran the Star Books series. Between 1975 and 1982[3], it published 37 books. Many of these books introduced famous countercultural writers to Spanish readers for the first time, including[4]:
- Jim Carroll (The Basketball Diaries, 1982)
- Gregory Corso (Gasoline, 1980)
- Allen Ginsberg (Howl, 1976)
- Jack Kerouac (On the Road, 1975)
- William S. Burroughs (The Yage Letters, 1977)
- Timothy Leary (Confessions of a Hope Fiend, 1978)
- Neal Cassady (The First Third, 1978)
- Steven Wilson (The Lost Traveller, 1979)
- Harlan Ellison (I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, 1976)
- Michael Butterworth and Michael Moorcock (The Time of the Hawklords, 1978)
- Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 1979)
The series also published books by countercultural musicians, such as Woody Guthrie (Bound for Glory, 1977), Bob Dylan (Tarantula, 1976), and Jim Morrison (The Lords and the New Creatures, 1977).
It also printed unusual classic works, including Confessions of an English Opium-Eater by Thomas de Quincey (1976), Treatise on Tolerance by Voltaire (1976), Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry (1976), Walden by Henry David Thoreau (1976), and Erewhon by Samuel Butler (1977).
Star Books also gave a platform to bold new Spanish-language writing, such as Poemas V2. Poesía compuesta por un ordenador by Ángel Carmona (1976), La(s) falsa(s) ceremonia(s) by Jaime Rosal (1977), and Derrama whisky sobre tu amigo muerto by Raúl Núñez (1979).
