Olumo Rock
Olumo Rock is a large rock in the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, in southwestern Nigeria.[1] It stands 137 metres above sea level. The name Olumo comes from two Yoruba words: "olu", meaning god or deity, and "mo", meaning moulded.[2]
History
In the 19th century, the Egba people used Olumo Rock as a place of shelter and defence during wars between groups in the region. The rock gave them a high position from which they could watch for enemies.[3] The city of Abeokuta grew around the rock. The name Abeokuta means "under the rock" in the Yoruba language.
The rock also has religious importance in the Yoruba religion, where its spirit is treated as an orisha, which is a type of deity.
Researchers have found stone tools at the site, including hand axes and hammer rocks. These tools are thought to be about 1.5 million years old.[4]
Tourism
Olumo Rock is one of the most visited places in Nigeria. Visitors can climb the rock and look out over the city of Abeokuta.[5]
