Nizhnekamsk (Russian: Нижнекамск, IPA: [nʲɪʐnʲɪˈkamsk]; Tatar: Түбән Кама) is a city in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It is to the south of the Kama River between the cities of Naberezhnye Chelny and Chistopol. Population: 234,044 (2010 Census);[1] 225,399 (2002 Census);[4] 190,793 (1989 Census).[5]

History

It was founded in 1961 as the work settlement of Nizhnekamsk (Нижнекамск). Its population increased because of the construction of Nizhnekamskneftekhim petrochemical industrial complex. Nizhnekamsk was granted city status in 1966.

Economy

The city is an important center of the petrochemical industry (Nizhnekamskneftekhim plant). It has the Begishevo Airport.

HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk is an ice hockey team based in Nizhnekamsk. It plays in the Kontinental Hockey League.
