Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a 2023 American action spy movie written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. He co-wrote the screenplay with Erik Jendresen. The movie is the sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and the seventh movie in the Mission: Impossible series. It stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, alongside an ensemble cast including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Henry Czerny.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiered on the Spanish Steps in Rome on June 19, 2023. It was released in the United States on July 12 by Paramount Pictures. At the 96th Academy Awards, the movie was nominated for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.^[6] It is the first Mission: Impossible movie to be nominated for an Academy Award.^[7] The movie was nominated for Best Sound and Best Special Visual Effects at the 77th British Academy Film Awards.^[8] A sequel, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is set to be released on May 23, 2025.^[9]

• Esai Morales as Gabriel, a powerful terrorist and Ethan's adversary (enemy) who appears to be working with the Entity, an all-powerful AI system, to rule the world. He and Ethan had a fateful encounter with each other prior to Ethan becoming an IMF agent.^[12]
• Pom Klementieff as Paris, a French assassin who works for Gabriel; Paris is based on the character of the same name portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in the original Mission: Impossible television series.^[13]
• Mariela Garriga as Marie, a woman from Ethan and Gabriel's past, seen only in brief flashbacks.^[14]
• Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, the former director of the IMF and current director of the CIA. He was last seen in Mission: Impossible (1996).
• Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, a US Intelligence agent assigned with hunting Ethan and his team.^[15]
• Cary Elwes as Denlinger, the Director of National Intelligence.^[16]
• Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas, a US Intelligence agent and Briggs's partner assigned to track down Ethan and his team.
• Frederick Schmidt as Zola Mitsopolis, Alanna's brother.^[17]

Additionally, Charles Parnell, Rob Delaney, Indira Varma, and Mark Gatiss appear as heads of US Intelligence agencies, representing NRO (National Reconnaissance Office), JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command), DIA, and NSA, respectively.^[18][12] Marcin Dorociński appears as the captain of the Sevastopol submarine.^[19]

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiered at the Spanish Steps in Rome on June 19, 2023. It was released on July 12 in the United States by Paramount Pictures.

It was originally scheduled to be released on July 23, 2021.^[20] It was later moved to November 19, 2021,^[21] May 27, 2022,^[22] September 30, 2022,^[23] and July 14, 2023.^[24] This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and production delays. In April 2023, Paramount announced at Cinemacon that the movie would be released two days earlier on July 12.^[25]

As of December 16, 2023, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has earned $172.1 million in the United States and Canada and $395.4 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $567.5 million.^[4][5] It was a box office disappointment (not being able to profit when showing in theatres).^[26][27] In September 2023, it was reported that Paramount received a COVID-19 insurance payout of £57 million from Swiss insurer Chubb.^[28][29]

On Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of 426 reviews are positive. The average rating is 8/10. The critic consensus reads: "With world-threatening stakes and epic set pieces to match that massive title, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One proves this is still a franchise you should choose to accept."^[30] On Metacritic, the movie has a score of 81 out of 100 based on 66 critic reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".^[31]
