The Massachusett were a Native American tribe in the Northeastern Woodlands. They lived around the Boston area in what is now Massachusetts. Many Natives died from European diseases like smallpox. They were one of the first Natives the British colonists met. They were part of the Algonquian language family. The missionary John Eliot converted many Native peoples to Christianity.[1]
