Marly Gallardo

Marly Gallardo is an Ecuadorian illustrator.[1] She creates digital art for organizations like The New York Times, the United Nations, Apple, and others.[1][2][3] Her art is magical realism.[1] She was a 2020 Forbes 30 under 30: Art and Style award winner.[3]

Early life

Gallardo was born in Ecuador. Her family came to the United States.[1] They lived in Jersey City.[1][2] Her parents spoke Spanish at home. They wanted her to remember Spanish. Gallardo saw art as a bridge between English and Spanish. Whenever she forgot a word she used art to communicate.

Gallardo spent her childhood in her parent's restaurant. There were many drawings and paintings there. Before she could write her grandmother would say what groceries they needed. Gallardo would draw a list.[1] She later went on to art school. At first she was a painter.[2][1] She could not afford expensive paints.[1] Then she started experimenting with Adobe Illustrator.[2][1] She became a digital illustrator. She received a bachelor degree in fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design.[1][2]

Career

Gallardo has done illustration work for The New York Times, the United Nations, Microsoft, Adobe, Apple and Netflix, and other organizations.[1][2] She teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Her art style is magical realism.[1] She likes the Latin American influence.[1] Her work includes ideas from folklore and Ecuadoran crafts. She draws a picture with a pencil on paper. Then she uses Adobe Illustrator to continue making the picture.[1]
